God crystals

As part of the the future is invisible expo, I worked together with the optoelectronics lab of southampton university. They created nanocrystals that can hold several terabytes of data for an infinite amound of time (source), thus dubbed the “god” or “supermand” crystals.
It seemed fitting to engrave data on these disks that describe the current state of the world: raging pandemics, climate change and turmoil on one hand. Technological advancements that promise a clean, sustainable future on the other.

I selected a data set that includes “hours worked per day, CO2 pollution, number of transistors per chip,…” (full set here). One crystal also has a hologram of the world hidden within,  which becomes visible when a laser shines through.
The data was encoded by the people at the optoelectronics lab into 2 nanocrystals on a tiny line, dividing the crystal into two equal parts. This symbolizes our current place in history. Will we act and use our knowledge and technology to better the situation, or wait and regress…
